TMJ/TMD

The “Temporomandibular Joint,” more commonly referred to as the “jaw joint" or "TMJ" assists in the basic opening and closing movements of the jaw. Unfortunately, this joint is a common area for recurring pain. Dysfunction in this area can be detectable as a popping or grinding sound.  Also, worn teeth, limited opening, locking of the joint, earaches, headaches, and pain in the muscles of chewing can be signs of a problem with the joint.

We offer a TMJ exam that evaluates the joint tissue in the “hinge” of the jaw and the surrounding musculature for signs of problems.  Usual treatments range from NSAID pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, to muscle relaxers, to bite appliances, to crown rehabilitation or orthodontic treatment.  For the most serious cases of TMJ, sometimes surgery is necessary to repair the joint.
